2017 was an amazing year for Kickstarter watches. We’ve seen many watches that were funded and many that didn’t make the cut. One of the micro watch brands that was funded and we supported it all the way and we still are is Vario – An authentic vintage styled watch that was meant for watch collectors. Today we will talk about the Vario Eclipse Emerald with the VH31 quartz movement. A watch that is unique from the fibers of the strap to the last screw.
The Vario Eclipse Emerald is constructed with 316L surgical stainless steel. It has a perfect 38mm diameter in size and a case thickness of 7mm. A true slim design that sits nicely on the wrist without feeling uncomfortable. One of the features that makes this watch stand out and make it special from the rest of the competition is the etched caseback that is inspired by the Chinese mytholody and it features a legendary hound, as well as the sign of the legend in traditional Chinese characters which translate “Heavenly Hound devours the Moon”. A true attention to detail there that separates them from the competition.
The face of the watch is of simple and classy design, combined by a nicely polished case with curved drilled lugs. Drilled lugs are usually a sign that the company though about the customers and the need of changing straps and made their lives easier to do that. The dial has an awesome sunburst effect which is can be more appreciated once you have it up close and personal. The hour/minute markers are unobstructed and they offer a very pleasant aesthetic that makes reading the time much easier than other watches.
The movement that is inside this bad boy is the Seiko vh31 which is a quartz movement with sweeping seconds. It has a ¼ beat and sweep across the dial. At the same time the company has produced another line of watches with the same design of the eclipse but they sport the 6t33, a reliable hand-wound movement made by Miyota. One of the many features of this watch is the crystal. Yeap, you guessed it, it’s an anti-reflective coated domed sapphire crystal which is mostly found on expensive luxury watches. As mentioned the case thickness is 7mm when we add the crystal in the calculation we see a thickness of 10mm, again quite slim with an awesome price tag.
The 20mm strap that is found on the eclipse is a genuine handmade Harris tweed strap that brings heritage and style together to meet your needs and to enhance the style of your wrist. Harris tweed is a handwoven textile that is made in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It is made from pure virgin wool and then is carefully dyed in order to produce unique and vibrant colors. On the back of the tweed we can see a soft leather which provides comfort and elegance at the same time. The company is offering many colors to choose from to satisfy even the most demanding customers. Whatever eclipse version you choose you can find at least 2 color combinations of tweed straps to go along.
Vario offers 6 different color variations of the eclipse series. All of them are also offered with the quartz and the hand-wound movement. The colors that are available have the following code names: Eclipse Emerald, Eclipse Hematite, Eclipse Onyx, Eclipse Pyrite, Eclipse Ruby and the Eclipse Topaz.
Vario Eclipse is one of those watches that you can wear every single day without feeling the need to update to something better or to change to something more comfortable. It’s the perfect combination of materials, quality, style and price. A hard to find combination. You can wear it at work or at an event, you can dress it up with a nice luxury suit or you can dress it down with a cool pair of jeans and boots. Although, make sure you don’t hit the beach with it because the water resistance is only at 5ATM. That’s not an issue though.
We have tested this watch for over a month and we can easily say that the compliments we received are more than I can remember. Again, a true bargain for what are actually paying for and when consider the competition at the $200-300 price range. The quartz version of Vario is priced at $218 and the hand-wound version sits at $328, which is a very attractive price for what it actually is. Geargreed approves companies like Vario and we will continue to support them because they honestly deserve it.
