Last year’s deadly flu was one for the record books. The CDC estimates some 80,000 Americans died from the virus and its complications last winter – the highest death toll since the 1970s.
Let’s get to the point as soon as possible and let’s start stating some undeniable facts. The flu shot doesn’t give you the flu. At all. Yes, there is a possibility you might get a slight reacting to the flu shot and feel a little bit off, that’s true; and yes the flu shot doesn’t have any guarantee that you won’t get the flue, but it reduces the risk of getting it massively. Although, one thing needs to be specified which is absolutely, undeniably and perfectly accurate: If you somehow you’ve got the flue, it wasn’t the flu shot that gave it to you.
As accurate as the above statement is it hasn’t stopped a lot of people believe the exact opposite.. To be more precise, a survey by Orlando Health found that more than half of the parents that were asked believe that the shot gives you a dose of flu or even the flu. This is going against the fact that no doctor will ever tell you that it does, and the medical profession has dedicated a great deal of time and effort over the years to inform people of the facts of the flu shot.
As Dr Jean Moorjani of Orlando Health explains, “The parts of the virus that are used are completely dead, so you cannot get the flu from the flu shot”. Cannot. So why do so many people think you can? As Mark Twain said, “a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes” which means that once misinformation is out there in the population, it’s very hard to shift to the truth, no matter how much experts keep trying and pushing the true facts into our minds.
So here we are, with not only a huge proportion of humanity believing flu shots give you flu, but – according to the same survey – a third of parents believing the shot doesn’t do anything at all.
So please, parents everywhere, believe us when we tell you, but more importantly believe the doctors when they say: “The flu shot will NOT give you the flu, but it DOES save lives”.
