Zoid Mastermind Watches – Be Different

Aiming to design and create a practical day-to-day wear that is a lot different from the mainstream, Andrew Oliver, the owner of ZOID Watches, created the ZOID Mastermind collection that is currently featured on Kickstarter. These uniquely crafted timepieces, the ZOID watches are the unification of performance and edginess; classic-chic watch for both men and women. If you are in the office, in the field, in a black tie event, anywhere you are the Mastermind has you covered.

The watch at a first glance, fills you up with a feeling of the past and a feeling of the future at the same time. The design is somewhat a resemblance of a time machine due to the see-through crystal case and because you can clearly identify all of the internals thanks to its housing. Lets dig deeper and find out what else the ZOID Mastermind has to offer:

The case

With a custom made case size of 9mm and a diameter of 48mm the Mastermind definetily sits on the bigger end of watches that feature a slim case profile. The case is constructed with surgical grade stainless steel 316L and is completed with a Brush finishing for the MD1, a gold plating finish for the MD2 and a black PVD finish for the MD3. Each variation of these watches brings out a different character that is without a doubt unique and true to its design. The crown of these timepieces sits proudly on the 12 o’ clock position in order to make it more unique and more different. The sides of the case are curved and see through at the same time in order to observe the amazing mechanics of the movement. Talk about attention to detail.

The straps

Attached to this magnificent case there are some magnificent straps to accompany the rest of the watch. The straps are 22mm wide and feature a very comfortable yet stiff feeling on the wrist. They are hand crafted out of genuine calf leather that feature an embossed croco pattern and hand-stitched details. Quality control out of this world.

The dial

The dail of the Mastermind is another unique creation of the ZOID featuring a honey-comb crocheted pattern that showcases the index markers on the outer circumference. On top of it we can identify the hour markers of 3/6/9/12 that give a more minimalist look on the dial although nothing can beat that honey-comb crocheted pattern. A very unique and creative approach by ZOID. We give them an applause for that. On top of everything the Mastermind sports a hardened mineral crystal that is super strong on hits. The company didn’t mention anything about a sapphire crystal but they might offer it as a stretch goal in their Kickstarter campaign.

The Hands

The hands inside any of the Mastermind timepieces are a custom made design created by ZOID just like everything else about this watch. The cool part is that they are filled with the super bring superluminova lume and that makes time reading a piece of cake, even at the most dark scenarios.

The movement

The powerhorse inside this baby is the Seiko NH70, an automatic skeletonized movement made by Seiko and just for that we can easily geek out and just look at it for hours. Reason being that, the Seiko NH70 is a reliable and trusted movement by the watch geek industry that screams quality. ZOID has clearly thought about every aspect of the watch they created and they are backing it up with the best components.  This beast of a movement has a self winding mechanism and has a power reserve of up-to 40 hours. To be completely honest with you, we are kinda biased by that movement because we are in love with Self-Winding timepieces. There is just something about them that provides a kind of control that you just don’t get with an automatic. Other than that, we can drool for days over mechanical watches!

The case back

On the case-back, we get a similar design like the front face which is a crystal clear casing that has 4 screws to keep everything together. Through the case back we can clearly see the movement and all the engravings on it. ZOID didn’t just use a movement out of the box but it looks like they added a bit of their brand on the rotor. What that means is that they marked the rotor with their branding just to give it a bit of extra uniqueness.

The rest

In general the ZOID Mastermind collection is a state of the art when it comes to timepieces. Is it for everyone? Maybe. You are the one who can decide that. Here at Geargreed we honestly fell in love with how different and how magnificent this watch looks and feels in real life. We feel that it might take 1-2 days to get used to it because is that much different but once you do, you won’t be able to get it off of your wrist.

The ZOID Mastermind has launched on Kickstarter on the 19th of January 2018 and within 3 days they managed to raise 77% of their target goal which shows that they deserve it and that they are here to stay. The early birds prices start at $420 so get ready to buy one now if you are interested because the minute the Kickstarter campaign ends the retail price will be $720.
