Sugar Zeffers thongs are pretty sweet. Not just because they look comfortable as all get out, but because they are literally made from sugar. Well, sugar cane anyway. Allbirds has put together a new outsole material—dubbed SweetFoam—made from sugarcane and engineered with the world’s first carbon-negative green EVA. Allbirds works in conjunction with the Brazillian petrochemical firm Braskem to grow the sugar cane with minimal fertilizer and to then process it in facilities running entirely on renewable power.
The thongs have a contoured footbed that has a cushiony quality to it, making you forget that you’re even wearing them. Because of that cushiony quality, there’s no breaking in period—the shoes instantly conform to your foot. They’re also lightweight, so they won’t be a drag on your feet. And it’s not just the footbed that is eco-friendly. The straps are made from recycled polyester lined with a super soft plant-based microsuede (also made from sugarcane). The straps are filled with castor bean oil foam.
It won’t be long before these thongs are being sported by celebrities. Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Garner, Emma Watson, Mila Kunis, and even Barrack Obama have been seen sporting Allbirds’ tennis shoes. The thongs come in four colors, are for men and women, have interchangeable straps, and will retail for $55.
