Viribus Unitis A11 Watch – Worth Every Penny

When it comes to microbrands, there are a few that are known by everyone and there are a few that are known by the hardcore fans. VIRIBUS UNITIS is among the most most hardcore watch micros out there and we are honored we are reviewing one of their latest models “VIRIBUS UNITIS A11” from the collection Airborne .

The Airborne series combines classic, sporty watch cases that are inspired from military airplanes from the ERA of the Austo-Hungarian Monarch. Although today we are talking only about the VIRIBUS UNITIS A11 the first watch of this magnificent collection.

The seaplane type OEFFAG Mickl H was the main inspiration for the extraordinary yet simple A11 model. In May 31st of 1917, the pilot Gottfried Freiherr Von Banfield won the first ever air victory at night in the air war history. The blue bird, which was the plane that was used at the time had an aeroplane engine of 145hp and it could reach 155km/h. When they updated the engine into a 200hp, the upgraded A11 was born and it was able to reach the amazing speed of 180km/h.

The A11 features a dial that is not very common. The dial sports a blue-black color combination that is not often seen in this type of watches. Usually dive watches sport a solid color combination but VIRIBUS UNITIS is looking to change that by delivering a watch that is unique, and screams for attention. We were amazed and we still are by the quality of the construction and the hard work that went into it.

The reason they chose this route is because they wanted to honor the OEFFAG Mickl H. First of all they included the blue bird at the position 11 to be reminded of the amazing air war.  The sandwich dial and the bezel blue color symbolizes the painting of the aircraft while the black gradient is a reminder that the first victory of the air war happened at night.  The arrrows that are printed at the position 9 are inspired from a historical instrument that was used to measure speed. The upper arrow shows the service peak heigh of the A11 and the lower arrow represents the water tightness of the watch in feet. We would prefer it if it was written in meters but “Oh well, we can’t have everything” We believe that the aeroplane couldn’t have had any better representation 100 years later by anyone. VIRIBUS UNITIS accomplished something spectacular, something that no other brand could do with such quality and style.

On the caseback we can see the name OEFFAG Mickl H which the austrial aeroplane manufacturer at the 12 position. We can also clearly see the iconic “blue bird” in the center of the caseback proudly engraved with high precision and quality.

Apart from these design elements, the watches of this series also have a very high readability in the dark thanks to the SUPER LUMINOVA and the amazing sandwich dial they created which makes it even more appealing. At least to us!

The A11 is constructed with surgical Stainless Steel 316L which is found on some of the most high end watch brands which is super resistant to corosion. It comes in a proud and big 42mm diameter case with a 11mm height. For me personally, my maximum height for a watch is 10mm but honestly when I wear the A11 I sometimes forget the i even wear it. When I do remember it, the bold stainless steel 22mm band, the layout of the sandwich dial, that thick crystal, the amazing shiny blue bezel, they are all inviting me to the adventure of the 1917 air war.

Reading the time on the A11 is very easy, thanks to the big bold hands. Furthermore, the hands stand out because of their luminous coating and because of the constrast between the blue-black dial it sets them apart.

The movement inside this beast is the super precise and reliable Miyota 9015, that features 24 jewels and that it has a vibration frequency of 28800bph. Undoubtly a beast watch with a beast movement.

The A11 was a an amazing experience wearing it and reviewing it! It is a remarkable debut piece and I can’t wait to review and see up close and personal the rest of their collection. The prices start at 390,00 EU, a very impressive value, and you can order it directly from https://www.viribusunitis-watches.com/en/luft/
